Language Arts and Reading
At the Lab School we make sure each child progresses at the level he/she is comfortably ready for. We use centers and the Daily Five method to ensure your child is getting time specifically set aside for his/her level of instruction in reading if help is still needed. Third grade and fourth grades break away from phonics instruction and focus on grammar and writing, leaving reading fluency to practice and comprehension through living books. Work turns to dictation, recitation, diagramming sentences, and memory work. Frequent writing assignments give students ample opportunity to hone their skills as they write stories for their own notebooks and send letters to servicemen and women. Language Arts will be combined and work will be expected at the appropriate level. We will also be exploring at least one chapter book together each month. Feel free to visit our list below to see what your child will discover as we add these chapter books to our picture books!
Please see the information below for each level as it pertains to your child.

Writing skills, Penmanship:
(for information on why we teach cursive, please visit our "about us" or "curriculum" page)
Building upon each grade, the consistent step-by-step approach to good penmanship presented each year emphasizes neatness and correct letter formation in daily practice. Writing habits which are continuously worked on and polished, will greatly influence students’ penmanship skills throughout life. Beginning in lesson 81, penmanship class will focus primarily on creative writing skills and some penmanship review. Creative writing skills will be taught in a sequence that will prepare students to write their own stories incorporating higher level thinking skills into imaginative writing.

Math
The Lab school of Oklahoma uses Saxon math for it's core math instruction. We believe each student is unique and teach to the individual. Therefore, we make use of the daily five method giving every child a time in which to receive one on one instruction at his or her level.
