Sixth Grade

Sixth Grade: Getting Ready for Jr. High

Classroom Motto for Sixth Grade:  "Work hard. Play hard." This is a quote my family has used from day one with our own children. In my classroom, I love to have fun while learning, but we always work first. Once our work is completed and done well, we are rewarded with some "play hard" time. We like to explore the trail near our school, play gaga ball, or enjoy the playground. My class is always motivated by this little motto!  ~ Ms. Lisa (6th Grade Teacher)
Human Anatomy and Physiology!
This year your students will discover the amazing world of human anatomy! The focus in logic based learning is student-based and developing study skills. Students will make a cell cake and decorate it with all the parts of the cell. In learning about the digestive system,  "digestion roller coasters" are built from craft supplies to illustrate how food travels through each part of the system. By swabbing hands and feet, behind the knee, door knobs, and other high traffic areas, bacteria is grown in Petri dishes  (Which leads to an increase in student involvement as far as cleaning goes afterward!).

Some topics covered will include:

Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology
The Skeletal System
The Muscular System
The Digestive and Renal Systems
Health and Nutrition
The Respiratory System
Our Blood
The Cardiovascular System
The Nervous and Endocrine Systems
The Nervous System Extended
Your Senses
The Integumentary System
The Lymphatic and Immune Systems
Growth and Development
Grammar and Writing
Sixth grade is a continuation of the easy grammar program used  for grammar and writing.  Students move from basic definitions through advanced sentence structure and analysis—your student will learn the three essential elements of language education: understanding and memorizing rules (prescriptive teaching), repeated exposure to examples of how those rules are used (descriptive instruction), and practice using those rules in exercises and in writing (practical experience). Students will move through the most basic concepts through advanced grammatical concepts such as modal and hortative verbs and multiple functions of noun clauses.Extensive diagramming exercises reinforce the rules and help technical and visual learners to understand and use the English language effectively. Text for examples and exercises are drawn from great works of literature, as well as from well-written nonfiction texts in science, mathematics, and the social sciences.

Social Studies:
."Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it." ~ Winston Churchill.  Learning history is most useful when it shows us what we can aspire to and what we ought to avoid or correct. This year, it is the hope that students will  hold in honor those heroic individuals who sacrificed for the good of our country, understand the basic foundations of civil and religious liberty unique to America's founding, and  be able to celebrate the rich mosaic of people who contributed to the founding and development of this nation. We hope that learning about both the triumphs and the tragedies of our history will cultivate a desire to be a part of our nation’s continued striving toward a “more perfect union” for all.
6th grade will prepare for the more rigorous project based study that will complete the logic stage in Jr High and prepare students for the rhetoric of High School.

A note from our teacher:
I love teaching at the Lab because teachers and the administration understand that kids need to move and engage all their senses when learning! It is not uncommon to see kids doing schoolwork outside or playing some kind of learning game that has them moving around, running, and laughing all the while learning something new! The Lab encourages project-based learning which helps kids take ownership of their education and helps them remember concepts for the rest of their lives. I have seen kids come to our school from elsewhere and they tell me how much they hate school. I tell them to give the Lab a month. It usually doesn't take that long before those students come to me with the biggest smiles on their faces telling me about something they are working on or about a friend they have made, and they say they love school again. Sometimes the kids say they don't want to go on holiday breaks! It's such an honor to be a part of such a special learning environment. I am truly blessed to be a part of this vision of developing kids into respectful, smart, and hardworking people.
Ms. Lisa

Sixth Grade Math

The Lab school of Oklahoma uses Saxon math for it's core math instruction.  We believe each student is unique and teach to the individual. Therefore, we  supplement with Math-U-See to integrate a more hands on approach with those who would benefit.  For more information on Saxon math, please visit our "About Us" page.
Below is a list of new topics covered this year in math.  As always we strive to fit our math program to your Childs unique needs.  For a great resource and explanation on why we use Saxon Math, please refer to our "About Us" page.
